The Urban Gardening Class featuring Renee Giroux, Curator of Bouley Botanical was an incredibly fun and interactive class. We learned about numerous types of herbs and how to grow them, taste tested the herbs, and transplanted our own herbs into larger planters. It was amazing to find that there are so many different types of herbs out there! Take basil for example, did you know there are over 100 different types? Each produces a unique fragrance and flavor on top of the flavor of the common sweet basil.
Some of the herbs we looked at and tasted includes Cuban Oregano, Pineapple Sage, Lemon Thyme, Aloe Vera, Deer Tongue Lettuce, Chamomile, and Purple Basil. We also learned how to dry these herbs. Take Oregano for example, you can cut the herb and put it in a brown paper bag for a few days to draw out the moisture and get a nice dry seasoning to shake over your favorite pizza! Special thanks to Renee Giroux and NY Vintners for being so generous with their time. If you or anyone you know are interested in attending an Urban Gardening Class, please keep on the look out for an announcement as we are looking to have another class in the near future!
