Our most anticipated event of the year was everything we hoped for, and more! We were able to raise more than $12,000, which we will put towards the creation of educational culinary programs, as well as fund a scholarship trip for 2 chefs to Japan. Set in Brooklyn Brewery for the third year running, the space was brimming with over 150 guests, 12 restaurants, and 5 beverage stations. Taiko performances by Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Group, a Soba making demonstration by Soba-Ya, and flower arrangements by Ikebana International gave the event traditional Japanese flair. Guests enjoyed an array of Izakaya themed dishes, from Chicken Char Siu by Tori Shin to Uni Miso Mazemen by Yuji Ramen. Cocktails by aka wine geek, Suntory Whisky, Shochu provided by Wine of Japan and Nishimoto trading as well as Brooklyn Brewery beer paired wonderfully well with the different flavors of the Izakaya themed dishes. A number of items were raffled off, including a Morimoto Sujihiki Knife, Morimoto Santoku Knife, $70 in Uber credit, and 5 seperate servings of freshly made Soba by Soba-Ya.
Our 12 restaurant participants included APT13, Blue Ribbon, Dassara Ramen, Hakata Tonton, Keizo Shimamoto (Ramen Burger), Morimoto, Nobu, Quality Meats/Park Ave, Red Rooster, Soba-Ya, Tori Shin, and Yuji Ramen. To be able to bring all of these great names under one roof was a truly unique, and delicious experience. Each participant shared their enthusiasm and passion for Japanese cuisine and culture, and it could be felt in their food, drinks, and the beat of their drums. Aki Matsuri is the true embodiment of The Gohan Society, as it is a celebration of Japanese food with friends and family, while inviting new members into our community. Thank you all for another great Aki Matsuri! Arigato Gozaimasu!
